In the past Kent has had many of its people settle in Canada. People who emigrated also married into families who had already settled in various areas. One of the problems in the past has been trying to locate records and information.

This is fast changing and there is now a lot of information about immigrants and their families that can be obtained on the Internet and a lot of it is free to access.

At The County Atlas Digital Project there are forty-three atlases containing Township maps, portraits and properties that have been scanned and there is also a  property owners' names database which links to the maps. The names of residents were marked on the lots of the township  This project which was began in 1998 is an amazing resource and could be of great help if you have ancestors or family who moved to Canada in the 1800's.

The Library and Archives Canada has progressively been making more records and information available free on the Internet and is always a good place to start searching for family who moved to Canada.

On the Library and Archives Canada site there is a free searchable database of children who were sent to Canada from Great Britain during the child emigration movement. The information you can find includes Name, age, ship travelled on, where it sailed from and to which port in Canada and where their destination within Canada, departure and arrival dates and if the child travelled as one of a group in a party, who headed the group. Home Children 1869-1830 The database is now almost complete thanks to the work of the  British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa

Quebec Passenger lists from the UK-1865-1900

The on line database contains the arrivals at Quebec from 1865 to 1900 which have been indexed by name. You can search by name to access digitised images of original passenger lists which list the name, age, country of origin, occupation and destination of each passenger. At Information for former British child migrants there is a downloadable information (pdf) from the Department of Health which provides contact details about tracing former child migrants, and various schemes in place to assist in this matter.

Denise Rason-North West Kent Family History Society.

It is with regret that the NWKFHS has learnt of the death of Denise Rason. Denise was the Society Secretary from 1993-1996 and adminsitered the Society mailing list on Rootsweb until recently. She was always ready to help people in their family history research and started the NWKFHS mailing list on Rootsweb in 2000 to encourage members to help and assist each other. Denise will be missed by her many colleagues and those she has helped at NWKFHS.
